Police cordon off roads around Hawkshead Lane
A SCHOOLBOY was killed in a horrific head on smash yesterday.

The 12-year-old, who is believed to be from Potters Bar, was trapped in the car with serious injuries.

A passing doctor quickly rushed to his aid following the collision along Hawkshead Lane, Welham Green, shortly after 8am.

A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "We believe this man was local and was able to attend to the young lad while he was trapped in the vehicle."

Firefighters from Hatfield and Potters Bar battled for about an hour to cut the youngster from the wreckage of a Ford Fiesta.

An air ambulance was put on standby.

The injured lad was taken to the QE2 Hospital, WGC, by ambulance, but there was nothing doctors could do for him.

His family were at the hospital at the time.

Police have said that the accident involved a dark green Ford Fiesta and a blue Renault Megane.

The Renault driver escaped without injury, but the Ford driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Road closures were put in place at Warrengate Lane, Blue Bridge Road and Swanley Bar Lane.

They remained in place for some hours while the emergency services dealt with the incident and police investigators examined the scene.

The boy had not been named as the WHT went to press.

Anyone who saw the vehicles before the incident or who witnessed the collision itself should call police on 0845 330 0222.
